Treatment of the exterior log surface

The log surface is continuously subjected weather stress, the harshest of which are UV -rays from the sun and moisture. The amount of stress can vary depending on the terrain and geographical location of the building. The design of the log building also matters -sufficiently long gutters and a high enough base help preserve the facade of a log home.

Surface treatment can have an impact on the appearance of a log house
A log home doesn’t necessarily require paint or impregnation against rot. The use of colouring agents to treat the exterior of a log house is, for the most part, a question of appearance. Many centuries-old log buildings have endured well without any sort of surface treatment. Logs will grey with time due to the influence of blue stain fungi. UV radiation from the sun disintegrates the surface layer of the wood, quickly greying the surface layer and producing a downy consistency. UV load is greatest on open building sites and on south-facing walls.

Moisture variations can cause problems
Moisture makes wood swell, and in drying the wood shrinks. This processes result in stresses in the wood and in time, cracks will emerge. Blue stain fungi, mould and decay fungi populations also thrive on the surface of moist wood. Blue stain fungi and mould do not deteriorate the solidity of the wood, but decay fungi weaken it and long term, make it unfit for use.

A surface treatment agent protects wood from UV radiation and moisture
Surface treatment agents protect wood from UV radiation and moisture. Surface treatments should only be applied to dry and clean timber. Additionally, optimal surface treatment conditions should be ensured. The treated surfaces should be dry, the outside temperature at least + 5 °C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%, also during the drying period. Do not carry out surface treatment under direct sunlight or if there is risk of rain or dew. A calm, cloudy but dry day provides the best conditions for applying the surface treatment.

Always observe the instructions provided by the surface treatment agent manufacturer. Careful, correctly performed work produces good, long-lasting and desirable results.
